It takes a village to complete the work of a thorough community mental health needs assessment. Gratefully, the Peaks Island community teamed up with the Peaks Island Health Association to get this first step completed. Since October, members of the island community have generously engaged our community mental health needs assessment partner, Suzanna Elkin. Over the past several months, Suzanna has conducted a community mental health survey in addition to a series of focus groups which have included the island church communities, elders, people living with a psychiatric condition, parents, mental health professionals and others. Over the last month, she has been involved in conducting twenty one-on-one interviews with people in our community whose perspectives have enhanced our understanding of mental health challenges and needs in our island community. Thank you, Peaks Island, for your partnership!
Now it’s time for us to share with you what we have learned about mental health needs on Peaks and to begin the work of program development to meet the needs.
