How to recognize a crisis - and where to turn for help on Peaks Island

A slide deck from the recent Peaks Island suicide prevention awareness session is now available, along with local Neighbor to Neighbor contact information and crisis support resources.
A recent session was offered through the Maine Suicide Prevention Program in partnership with NAMI Maine, with a youth-focused emphasis on awareness, prevention, and practical support. The presentation covers how to recogni
ze warning signs, how to talk directly and compassionately with someone who may be struggling, and how to connect people with help before a concern becomes a crisis.

One of the most important reminders from the program is that support does not have to begin with a formal appointment or a perfect plan. Sometimes it starts with a neighbor, a phone call, or someone willing to ask a direct question and stay present for the answer.
Here on Peaks Island, Neighbor to Neighbor is one local point of connection. If the information in the slide deck brings up questions or concerns - about yourself, a loved one, a neighbor, or someone else in the community - Peaks Island Neighbor to Neighbor volunteers can be reached through the central line at 401.358.2243.
The slide deck also includes statewide and national crisis resources. For immediate support, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. The Crisis Text Line is also available by texting HOME to 741741. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
NAMI Maine also provides education, support groups, a helpline, suicide prevention training, and other mental health resources for individuals, families, professionals, and communities throughout the state.
